Keep Up With Promotions!

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

We’ve all done it - well, those of us who have accounts with affiliate marketing networks. Set up an account, put a few banners on a site, and then get tied down with the next project, forget exactly who we joined/what we linked to and just delete each merchant email as they come flooding through.

But STOP! Take your merchants seriously! You bothered to take the time to set up the site in the first place, so make the most of the offers and promotions offered to you. Admittedly, on a Friday afternoon when you’ve had your 4th AffiliateWindow email from Comet about £10 off a particular washing machine you can start to glaze over and just think it’s too much to keep up with. But from the point of view of your visitor - that might be just what they need! And £10 off just what they need, is worth having!

So take notice of each email and act on at least some of the offers thrown your way. Code your website in such a way that it’s easy for you to add the latest offers - if it’s quick and simple you’re more likely to. Plus
you may want to build a mailing list / newsletter system so you’ve got a base of users to promote your latest deals to. (And of course, if you need a hand with any of this, you know where we are ;) )

The Mobile Internet is Now

Monday, April 14th, 2008

I’ve been reading a fair bit lately into what many people suspect will be the ‘next big thing’ on the Internet; the final ‘coming of age’ of the mobile Internet.

There are a lot of people doing a lot of things in the mobile web world, I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface of a whole new world of innovation, but here are my top finds so far.

www.gypsii.com - A social networking tool which is location based. There’s a neat little introduction video which explains it all.
www.mofuse.com - Create a mobile version of your site.

Here’s one vision that I especially like, entitled The Future of Internet Search: Mobile Version, from the PetitInvention blog.

The Future of Internet Search: Mobile Version

But you might ask why this has happened before. People have been talking about the mobile web for ages, but it’s not really caught on… There are a few reasons for this, but many people now believe we’re literally standing on the edge of a precipice of a new cultural revolution where access to mobile web technologies and services will literally change the way we live and organise our lives together.

Buy why now?

i) Web developers are finally embracing the use of good, high quality, semantically rich code. CSS layouts are replacing the bloating table based layouts of the late 90’s and early 00’s.

ii) Mobile phone technology is also finally catching up to the demands placed on it by the content. XHTML is becoming more widely supported in place of the older more basic mobile markup languages such as WML. The iphone is the obvious example of how people are starting to realise they will be able to access fully featured websites via their phones.

iii) It might be a small factor, but a new announcement by the European Commission to support in-flight mobile use by harmonizing the technical and licensing requirements.

iv) Mobile Internet companies are starting to offer the consumer a realistically affordable tarrifs for going online.

v) Firefox on your mobile. - Mobile Firefox prototype browser arrives for eager early adopters to play with.

So the infrastructure is there, the technology is there. The software and applications are fastly becoming available. All that remains now is the slow but inevitable adoption of all this by the average joe on their mobile handset.

If anyone would like to show us some examples of their mobile based services and applications we’d love to see them.

Some Innovative Ideas for Getting Inbound Links to your Website

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Everyone who has tried to market a website will know how hard it is getting established. Getting those first, all important inbound links to your site can feel like an uphill struggle, especially if you’ve built ‘just another’ shopping website. You might think your new site is the best thing since Google, but to anyone else it’s yet another boring link exchange email.

The most obvious way of acquiring backlinks for your website goes like this:

i) Do a search in your favourite search engine for your chosen keyword
i) The send an email to the site owners of the sites you find asking for a link exchange.

I’ve done this sooo many times and to be honest I don’t know why I bother. It’s got to be one of the most frustrating and depressing things you can do online! After sending about 20 blandly worded emails out into the ether you’ll be left feeling totally disillusioned - I can guarantee it! But there are cleverer ways you can go about building links, and here are a few of my favourite suggestions.

Link Baiting

I’ve been reading a lot lately about ‘link baiting’. Linkbaiting is the latest SEO buzzword and the new favoured method of building inbound links to your website.

The idea is to create something on your site that naturally attracts inbound links from forums, blogs and social media sites like digg.com, del.icio.us, Furl, Shoutwire, Mixx and all the billions of other site’s that have popped up lately. The idea is to create something with a ‘buzz’ around it. Viral marketing isn’t anything new, but I’ve seen some really great examples lately, including the Facebook haters video made right here in good ‘ol Bristol. (Forget San Francisco, this is where it’s at lol). Anyway back to the post.

Here are a few possible ‘link baiting’ ideas.

1. Create something genuinely useful for the community. This could be releasing a part of your code that is particularly clever, or writing a neat Javascript library that does cool stuff.

2. Create some free web templates and leave little links at the bottom to one of your sites, then let people download them for free as long as they leave the links intact. Obviously many will remove them anyway, but a few honest people might provide you with a few backlinks.

3. Make something funny, like a movie or picture gallery, then post on the social networks.

4. Interview someone famous, then publish the article as an exclusive on your site.

5. Write something controversial.

6. Write an article and submit it to an article archive. Let people publish it on their website in exchange for a backlink. There are loads of article archives out there.

7. Build a useful tool. - SEO Book have done this with their keyword tool. A tool aimed at replacing the ever popular, but now sadly expired Overture keyword tool.

8. People love freebies, why not offer people some free stuff if they link back to you. Probably cheaper than buying a link in the Yahoo directory anyway :)

Other ideas for acquiring inbound links

Link baiting it just one approach, here are a few more tried a tested ideas.

1. Submit your site to link directories. - A little bit of an goldie olden this one. You’ll find ‘The Ultimate list of link directories’ floating around somewhere, although most are out of date. You can waste an awful lot of time on link directories (believe me!).

2. Offer unique ’sponsorship’ opportunities on your website in certain categories. If you have a half decent shopping website for example, you could offer a merchant or partner site an exclusive link in the category most relevant to them. This is something we’ve been thinking about on a new price comparison site we’ve launched. As your browse each of the categories there’s a section at the top of the page that says ’sponsored by’ then a site name and link. This is prime real-estate and made all the more eye catching with a funky javascript fade-in after the page has loaded.

Whether this will get any interest is anyones guess, but I’m thinking there could be a few other similar style opportunities out there. I’ve noticed some very cool page turning ‘ad’ effects on sites lately. Just make it a little different from the normal ‘pointless’ links pages and people might sit up and take notice.

Final Thoughts

This post was going to be all about the best way of acquiring inbound links, but that’s reminded me of another useful tip I picked up a little while ago about finding possible link partners. Instead of doing a search and contacting those site that come up for your chosen keyword, why not find out who’s linked to them, and go after them instead…? You can do this easily with Google. Just enter ‘link:www.competitorssite.com’ to see the links pointing to their site.

I hope you’ve been partially inspired at least to think of new and innovative ideas for getting links back to your site. It’s a bit of a challenge thinking up new ways to grab people’s attention, but it pays if you give it some thought and planning and have a proper strategy in mind for promoting your site online.

Marketing online is all about creative thinking, so go and put your thinking hat on, and just remember… In the words of Damon Killian, “Give the people what they want”.

New Social Shopping Widgets aid Online Promotion

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

It’s an increasingly crowded online marketplace, with everyone competing for the top spots on the search engines, beating each other up with adwords and fighting for all the traffic they can get. You might have the best products in the world, but if nobody knows you exist then it’s hard to get noticed.

That’s why we’ve just released some rather cool little widgets for online shops that bridge the gap between you the merchant and the user, giving you tonnes of free exposure for your coolest products. All in a simple bit of Javascript that brings all your best products to the naturalbornshopper.com community. Just add a couple of lines of code to your product details pages and you’ll get a lovely little badge showing how popular your products are. Complete with a link that lets our users vote you up the homepage of NaturalBornShopper.com and the associated shopping guides.

For more information take a look at the widgets page on NBS.

Social Bookmark Shopping.. What!?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Hands up who’s heard of social bookmarking. I expect most people reading this article will have. The concept has been around for an Internet ‘eternity’ now. I thought everyone in the Facebook generation would be familiar with the idea, but I was speaking to a friend of mine yesterday, happily telling them about NBS and explaining how we’ve incorporated a ’social bookmark’ scoring system that’s a bit like ‘Digg for shopping’, and they were like “Dig what!?…”.

Sometimes I think we in the Internet business are in danger of losing touch with the vast majority of people that actually use the Internet… Our target audience… We get caught up in our own little worlds of digging, backing and blogging and forget what it’s all about in the first place.

And if you’re involved in the more technical aspects of website building like I am, you’re in even more danger of getting removed from reality as you have to compete with the ever changing platform on which you’re developing. (ajax, jQuery, browser standards, APIs, blah blah blah).

So just remember, when building a site don’t lose touch with the original purpose. Get an opinion from anyone willing to offer one. If someone says, “don’t ask me I’m hopeless on the Internet”, that’s exactly who you should be asking. If you can persuade them you’ve got a great idea, then everyone else should be a piece of cake.

How to Generate an Image Captcha

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Everyone hates spammers, how they sleep at night I don’t know… Maybe they are so rich they can afford to buy those special space age mattresses that mold to fit your shape, or machines that imitate the sound of the ocean! (OK I got that from a film). But one tried and tested way of reducing your websites chance of being the victim of spam is to protect all your forms with an image captcha. The big sites like Yahoo have been using image captcha’s for years, but the idea of generating an image simply by writing code may be a little daunting for some. It was for me, until I actually sat down and gave it a go… Surprisingly it’s very easy, and I’ll show you how to create a basic image captcha in this article.

Everything I code is in PHP, so if you are looking for any other way of generating a captcha I’m afraid I can’t help you, although I suspect the principles are pretty much the same. In summary the basic requirements for this to work are:
a) You need to be able to use sessions
b) You need to have the gd library installed in your version of PHP. You can check to see if it is enabled by using the phpinfo() function. I’ve found that most recent installations of PHP seem to have it setup by default, so you should be ok on both counts.

In summary this is how it works:
i) You generate a random code
ii) You store this random code in the users session
iii) You also generate an image using PHP and display a distorted version of this code in the image.
iv) You ask the user to enter what they see in the captcha.
v) On the form submission you check to see if they entered what you already have stored in the session. If the two codes match then you have a human, if they don’t they you either have a very frustrated user or a bot, either way they get an error message and asked to try again.

See I told you it was simple! All that’s left for me to do it provide you with a little actual code to work on.

The Code - verification.php

This is the all important file that does all your work for you. It generates your code, saves it in the session and generates your image.

<?PHP

// Start the session for the user
session_start();

// Generate the verification number and store in the session
$verification_code = array();

// Create an image with 4 characters
for($i=0; $i<4; $i++) {
if(rand(0,1) == 1) {
$verification_code[] = chr(rand(97,122)); // Choose any lowercase letter in the range a-z
} else {
$verification_code[] = chr(rand(49,57)); // Choose any number in the range 1-9
}
}

// Save the code in the session
$_SESSION[’verification’] = md5(implode(”", $verification_code));

// Now we create the verification image itself
// We have 4 different background images which we’ll use to create the images
// You can create these in the graphics program of your choice.
// We then randomly select one of these images to use as the background for our image captcha
$image = imagecreatefromjpeg(”/path/to/background/images/background_”.rand(1,4).”.jpg”);
$text_colour = imagecolorallocate($image, 255, 255, 255);

// Add text to the verification image
$x_offset = 16;
foreach($verification_code as $chr) {
imagettftext($image, (22+(rand(-4, 4))), rand(-20, 20), $x_offset, (31+(rand(-5, 5))), $text_colour, ‘/path/to/fonts/trebuc.ttf’, $chr);
$x_offset += 22;
}

// Make sure the page isn’t cached and set the content type to image/jpeg
header(”Expires:Mon, 01 Jan 2002 05:00:00 GMT”);
header(”Last-Modified:”.date(”D, d M Y H:i:s”).” GMT”);
header(”Cache-Control:no-store,no-cache,must-revalidate”);
header(”Cache-Control:post-check=0,pre-check=0″,false);
header(”Pragma:no-cache”);
header(’Content-type:image/jpeg’);

// Finally we can send our response back to the user and free any memory associated with image
imagejpeg($image,null,100);
imagedestroy($image);

?>

Now to use your image captcha simply include it within an image tag within a form as follows.

<form method=”post”>
<input type=”text” class=”text” name=”verification” id=”verification” />
<img src=”verification.php” alt=”please enter the text you see in this image” />
<input type=”submit” name=”submit_button” id=”submit_button” />
</form>

Now when you submit the form the last check is to make sure the code entered in the form is the same as the code saved in the session that appears in the image captcha. As we md5 hashed the value in the session we need to compare like for like.

<?PHP

$error = array();

if (md5($_POST[’verification’]) != $_SESSION[’verification’]) {
$error[] = “Please re-enter the verification image. NB. All letters are capitals.”;
}

?>

Troubleshooting

The main gotchas I’ve found in the past were missing font files; you’ll need to download the .ttf file for whichever font you choose to use. These are available on the Internet (or even on your computer most likely). Just remember to upload them to your server and provide the path to them when calling the imagettftext() function. If PHP can’t find the font file you won’t see the image at all.

So there you have it, pretty simple really and a great bit of code to include in your web forms to help stop those pesky spam bots. You can see the code in action here.

Stuck for Inspiration?

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

The Internet is just so big, sometimes it’s hard to know where to start when you are looking for inspiration or new ideas. Google is an obvious place, but only if you know what you’re looking for. It’s a great tool for locating information, but what if you just want to browse and learn something interesting but you’re not quite sure what… Well that’s where sites like Digg.com come in. If you don’t know what you’re looking for until you find it then social bookmarking sites can give you an up to date buzz, news and articles to inspire. There are plenty of other sources of inspiration of course, here’s my top list.

1. Social bookmarking sites, digg.com, technorati et al.
2. Forums - Can be a great place to meet new people, discuss topics or get help. However they are often full of rubbish and finding genuinely useful information can be a mission. There are nuggets of information there if you have the time to find them.
3. Blogs - I love reading people’s blogs and keep meaning to make a list of blogs I like when I find them, but I all too often forget. If you find a good blog you can often get far better constructed thoughts and articles.
4. News sites - I occassionally read the bbc website, also the register has up to date articles.
5. Stumble Upon - You could group this together with the social bookmarking sites above, but I actually think it’s a little different, and really very clever!
6. Facebook - A great way to waste time… Enough said :)
7. Read a newspaper - Ok it’s not online, but I think that’s a good thing. Unplug for a while, put your feet up with a coffee and chill.

Any ideas please let me know!

The Affiliate Marketing Board Game

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

It occurred to me the other day, just how much affiliate marketing is like playing monopoly! It’s probably the reason I like it so much. Everyone trying to make it around the board, picking up as many properties as they can, in the hope that some will make decent returns.

Trying to decide whether to split investments and grab as many cheap properties as possible, or spend time and hold out for the major cash collectors of Mayfair and Park Lane… Of course we all pay for the privilege of playing, some of us have even sacrificed daylight to carry on the game. Social lives certainly go out the window for the dedicated affiliate gamer. All in the hope that don’t go bankrupt before passing go and collecting our £200. Every now and then we might strike it lucky and land on Free Parking, or win the occasional beauty contest… a trip to Las Vegas perhaps… And sometimes we get stung with ‘building repairs’ in the form of a lawsuit, unpaid commissions, untracked sales, or some other freeloading corporation who grow thanks to our efforts, then dump us at the first opportunity.

Then again maybe it’s more like snakes and ladders, it certainly feels like that at times, and anyone who’s run an SEO site I’m sure will agree! Just when you think it’s safe to relax, the SERPs are turned upside down and you have to start all over again…

I think some people definitely like playing Snap, when it comes to thinking of new ideas and even site designs…

But at the end of the day, it’s all fun and games!

a4uexpo Affiliate Marketing Conference 2007

Monday, October 29th, 2007

If Carlsberg ran conferences they would probably be something like a4uexpo! That was one of the comments I’ve read today about the a4uexpo affiliate marketing conference held last week at ExCeL London. It was a fantastic event although probably the most exhausting couple of days of my life!

Here’s a run-down of my 3 day a4uexpo experience.

Wednesday - Arrive in London after a slightly hair-raising minibus trip down from Bristol with the rest of the a4uexpo team. We’re given ‘party’ bags complete with mints, twirly whirlys and pro-plus! (thanks Claire T) to see us through the next couple of days. I’m not sure who taught the driver to drive, but I made sure I had my seatbelt on all the way! He was a bit of a nutter! We grabbed some dinner, and checked into the hotel.

Thursday 5am - Get up and head over to ExCeL to start our marathon day. I start by putting on my lovely branded a4uexpo t-shirt (The shirt I ordered was giant sized!)

Thursday 8.30am - People start to arrive, things are remarkably organised! Exhibitors are still setting up, but registration opens and away we go. Meanwhile I’m frantically trying to work out how the audio visual equipment works in the conference room I’m in charge of running! I hadn’t expected to be faced with a 20 channel mixing desk and loads of audio equipment I don’t even know the name of. Whatever happened to pressing play/stop… This could be a challenge!

Thursday 11am - Thankfully Ryan and I manage to figure out what all the buttons do and the talks begin. Starting with a really interesting talk about Social Networking and it’s importance and relevance in todays Internet marketing world. Food for thought indeed. There seems to be demand from all quarters at the moment for Facebook application development, it will be interesting to see if it lasts.

Thursday 6pm - The last session is over, and it’s been non-stop all day! Now the fun begins, in the shape of the a4uawards and evening event!

Friday 2am - The awards are over, the David Brent lookalike did his trademark dance and everyone is suitably wasted after cashing in all their free drink tokens. We now head over to the hotel bar for some more drunken ‘networking’ :) I’ve been involved with these affiliate events for a few years now, and free bars seem to be the one common theme.

Friday 3am - Get to bed at last!

Friday 7am - Wake up and ready to start the final day of the expo, sessions start at 11

Friday 6pm - I’ve never felt so exhausted in my life, but it’s been a great couple of days. All that stands between me and going to bed now is the London rushhour! The last thing you’d want to face when you’re finding it hard to stand up straight without passing out, but with minimal delays and a seat all the way, we manage to get back to Bristol by 9pm.

Only 363 days until the next one!
