Think Green

At 18a we make sure we are having as small a negative impact on the environment as possible. I don't think any business can rightly claim to be 100% carbon neutral - (except perhaps a wind farm!) That's why:

  • We planted trees for every new client we built a website for in our first year. We now have a fantastic, budding 18a Orchard full of lovely fruit trees all helping to soak up Co2 from the atmosphere as well as (hopefully) providing us with a healthy snack.

  • We use green hosting for our clients sites - Servers need to be available 24/7, who knows when people will want to access your website. Obviously this combined use of power does mount up to a significant level when you think how many webservers there are in the world. It's still a fraction of the damage done by car travel for example, but that brings me onto our next point.
  • We use Skype and Video conferencing wherever possible. Nothing quite beats face to face communication when you're trying to get your point across, but Skype video calls are pretty good and we try to make the best use possible.
  • We drink less tea - Ok maybe this is partly because I'm on a fitness drive, but drinking water instead of tea saves energy boiling the kettle... Ok maybe I'm stretching things a little now... :)

Ways to be Green

If like us you want to do your bit for the environment here are a few tips to being green in business.

  1. Try to only use recycled stationery, or materials made from sustained forests. Consider this the next time you're ordering new promotional material or business cards.
  2. Switch to a green energy supplier.
  3. Got large premises? Remember to switch lights off in rooms you're not working in. And ofcourse those light bulbs should be energy saving ones.
  4. On that tea break, only boil as much water as you need to.
  5. Work really really hard like we do, so you don't need to put the heating on!
