UK Number 3 in Top Startup Hotspots

Startup MapEveryone knows Silicon Valley is the 'home of the startup', but here in the UK, we're not doing too badly in terms of levels of innovation. There are clearly some motivated people around the UK, trying to dream up new ideas and push new online startups. So why then have the vast majority of successful, big online ventures (Facebook, Google, Twitter) come from across the water? I suspect the answer is quite simply money!

Despite popular belief that great websites go 'viral' in reality it takes a great deal of money behind them, pushing them in the right direction, and the investment community in the UK is far more tight walleted than their contemporaries in the US, particularly when it comes to riskier online ventures.

Better than that, I've just zoomed in on the map, and it turns out that Bristol is no. 2 in the UK, behind London. London is streets ahead with 872 startups, whereas Bristol has just 44, but that's one more than Oxfords 43! The UK's second biggest City, Birmingham has a dissapointing 14, but Manchester isn't so bad with 42.

Still, considering size, Bristol is clearly punching well above it's weight!
