There’s a Google patent doing the rounds that’s making website owners nervous. The idea: Google generates its own AI-powered landing page for your business, right inside the search results. No click required. No visit to your site.
The obvious question is a reasonable one. If Google can synthesise your content into their own page, why does anyone need a website at all?
It’s a fair concern. But it’s the wrong conclusion.
What this patent actually signals isn’t the death of your website. It’s a change in what your website is for – and a significant raising of the technical bar for anyone who wants to remain visible.
Your Website Is No Longer a Destination. It’s a Data Source.
Think about how this actually works. For Google to build an AI-generated page about your business without hallucinating facts or getting sued, it needs a reliable, authoritative, machine-readable source to pull from.
That source is your website.
By 2030, your website won’t primarily be a place people visit. It’ll be the canonical backend – the trusted database that Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Apple Intelligence all query when they want to say something accurate about you. They’re the frontend. You’re the source of truth.
Which means the question isn’t “do I still need a website?” The question is “is my website a good enough data source for the AI systems that are going to represent me?”
And that’s a very different problem to solve.
If your site is down when Google’s crawler comes calling, the synthetic landing page has nothing to pull from. If your SSL has lapsed, Google’s own safety filters will refuse to surface your information – they’re not going to put their reputation on the line for an insecure source. If your schema is broken or your metadata is wrong, the AI-generated summary of your business will be empty, inaccurate, or simply absent.
Bad SEO used to mean you were on page ten. Bad technical health in this new world means the AI skips you entirely.
Google Wants to Answer the Question. They Don’t Want to Fulfil the Order.
There’s a natural ceiling to what an AI-generated search result can do, and it’s worth understanding where that ceiling sits.
Google can tell someone how your service works. They can summarise your offer, your location, your hours, your reviews. What they can’t do is take the booking, process the payment, manage the client account, or handle the nuanced back-and-forth that comes with any real professional relationship.
The fulfilment layer still requires your infrastructure.
There’s also a trust dynamic that’s easy to overlook. Users are becoming increasingly sceptical of AI-generated content – and rightly so. When someone is making a high-stakes decision (hiring an agency, buying medical equipment, getting legal advice), they will click through to verify that a real, credible entity exists behind the AI summary. The AI result gets them interested. Your website closes the deal.
The click isn’t dead. It’s just reserved for the moments that matter most.
Technical Health Is the New SEO.
This is the reframe that most people haven’t made yet, and it’s the one that changes how you should be thinking about your site.
In the old model, SEO was primarily about signals that humans could see – content quality, keyword relevance, backlinks, page experience. You were optimising for a ranking algorithm that ultimately put you in front of a human reader.
In the synthesised web, you’re optimising for machines that decide whether to include you in their output at all. Those machines are fast, expensive to run, and ruthlessly efficient. They prioritise sites that are quick to crawl, structurally clean, and semantically unambiguous.
Concretely, that means:
- Schema integrity matters more than ever. If your JSON-LD is broken or your
@typeproperties are wrong, the AI-generated summary of your business will be incomplete at best, wrong at worst. Block-level schema validation isn’t an SEO nicety – it’s foundational. - Speed is a filter, not a ranking signal. AI crawlers are computationally expensive. They deprioritise slow sites not because of a penalty, but because the economics don’t work. A slow site is increasingly an invisible site.
- AI crawler access needs explicit management. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Perplexity’s crawler – these are distinct from Googlebot, and they each need to be permitted in your robots.txt. Most sites haven’t thought about this. Many are inadvertently blocking the very systems they need to be visible to.
- llms.txt is becoming a signal. The emerging standard for telling AI systems what your site is, what matters, and how to represent you. Early to implement, but the trajectory is clear.
The Bigger Picture: You Publish, the World Distributes.
We’re moving toward what you might call a decentralised information economy. You publish your truth on your domain. Google, OpenAI, Meta, Apple – they consume it, reformat it, and distribute it through their own interfaces.
If you don’t have a website, you have no seat at the table. You’re entirely dependent on what the world thinks it knows about you, rather than what you’ve chosen to tell it.
And if your website exists but isn’t technically healthy – slow, insecure, structurally broken, crawled by the wrong bots – you’re publishing into a void. You have a seat at the table, but your microphone is off.
The businesses that win in this environment won’t necessarily be the ones with the best content strategy. They’ll be the ones whose technical foundations are solid enough that every AI system querying the web can find them, understand them, and represent them accurately.
That’s a monitoring problem as much as it is an SEO problem.
