Hi,

Happy heat wave week! 🥵 I hope you’re all managing to keep cool.

  • Easy win for guiding Google
  • Why it’s more important than ever
  • A strategy to get you started
  • Grab your seat for Thursday

I’ve taught SEO for almost 20 years and I’ve ALWAYS told people the importance of interlinking their content.

Interlinking is linking pages of your website to other pages of your website. Easy peasy.

It’s a key way to tell Google what content is on your website and what’s important.

Tom wrote a blog post recently about the importance of interlinking and it inspired this week’s email.

When Google is crawling your website, you want it to discover – and index – as much about your products or services as possible. If you ever see “Discovered – currently not indexed” in Google Webmaster Tools it’s because Google has said “yep, we know that page is there, but we’re not bothering to index it yet”. But if you had lots and lots of blog posts or pages of your website linking to that page, and so Google repeatedly found itself being taken to that page, it’d start to think “hang on, this page must be important”.

Why is it more important than ever?

When an AI bot is crawling your website, they’re looking to build up knowledge. If they repeatedly read an article about a topic, and it always links back to your main services page for that topic, they’ll take more notice of that services page. If you’ve heard of RAG, that’s what I’m talking about here – read more in Tom’s post.

So how can you do it?

Start this week by going through your most recent blog posts – go as far as back as you’ve got time for. And look for words in them that you can link to a key service or product page of your site.

Try to avoid linking words like “read more here” (even though that’s what I did above – this is an email so different rules apply) – try to find some key words or phrases and link them. That reinforces the link even more – it tells the bot “if you want to read more about this particular subject or topic, this is where it’s at”.

And if you find there’s not a super great fit between your blog posts and your key pages, then you might want to pivot your strategy slightly.

And if you don’t have a blog, just check if there’s anywhere you could be doing this more around your site – like copy on your home page linking to a super relevant internal page where you go into more detail about a product or service to convert people.

Ruling principle: you want to link to / aim the links at the page(s) you want people to visit most.

Meanwhile, if you want to join me on Thursday in my next talk about The Agentic Web and AI in regards to your website, grab your seat here. It’s Thursday at 2pm – 3pm, but I’ll send around a recording to anyone who can’t make it live.

And for the rest of the week, stay in the shade, stay hydrated, wear a hat and remember to wear sunscreen! I’m off to see if there are any paddling pools in stock anywhere in the UK…

Speak soon,

Lisa
