Trailer for The Social Network Movie

lisa Lisa, 27th July 2010

They're right - you don't make 500 million friends without making a few enemies along the way too.

If you haven't seen the trailer for the new film about the creation of Facebook, check it out below.

It looks better than I thought it would, but I find some of the dialogue a little OTT... Or maybe Mark Zuckerberg is really that dramatic. Maybe he did say things such as he wanted to take "the entire social experience of college and [put] it online". And maybe when talking about clubs he did longingly and - almost desperately - say "because they're exclusive, and fun. And they lead to a better life". Or maybe that's Hollywood's spin.

In an interview I saw with the Facebook founder, he revealed how the cousin of the actor who plays him in the film is actually a designer at Facebook in California! So I hope everyone's still on friendly terms seeings the music over the trailer is a cover of Radiohead's "Creep".

In defence of the 26 year old entrepreneur, he is at the healm of an enormous force... and anyone new to business is going to make some mistakes. Anyone not new to business would still make plenty when your business sky rockets like Facebook has. They employed a little over 400 people 2 years ago and now employ over 1600.

It's every web developers dream to make a site that the world jumps on board with... but there is most certainly a down side too. Near the end of the trailer you hear the line "your best friend is suing you for $600,000,000". No one wants that! Or I wouldn't anyway, even if I could afford it. I need to be able to sleep at night!

Overall though - isn't it a little early for a film about Facebook? How's the film going to end? "Oh yey, we got 500,000,000 users".... if it's going to be at all factual they can't go any further with it. Maybe that's intentional so they can make a sequel! Or maybe they didn't want to wait until the end because they didn't want to miss the peak of Facebook's success - who's going to go and watch a film about a website they used to use? Maybe "And then it was sold to Google for a billion trillion dollars. The End" just wasn't going to be all that interesting! Does the timing of the film mean that Facebook's got no where left to go?
